The phrase "Prayer is better than sleep" in the adhan: is it in the first adhan of Fajr or the second?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Is the phrase "Prayer is better than sleep" in the adhan in the first adhan of Fajr or in the second?

The Shaykh : It is in the first adhan, as it came in the hadith:
When you give the first adhan for the dawn, say: Prayer is better than sleep
, so it is in the first adhan, not in the second adhan.
But we must know what the first adhan is in this hadith?
The student: Bilal's adhan.

The Shaykh : The first adhan is the adhan that takes place after the time has entered, and the second adhan is the iqamah, because the iqamah is called:
an adhanأذاناً
. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Between every two calls (to prayer) there is a Salat
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 185Sahih (Darussalam)
, and the meaning is: the adhan and the iqamah.
In Sahih al-Bukhari, it is stated that the Commander of the Faithful, Uthman ibn Affan, added a third adhan for Jumu'ah. So how many adhans are there in Jumu'ah according to this hadith?
Three, good.
So the first adhan in which Bilal was commanded to say:
The prayer is better than sleep
Sunan Ibn Majah 716Da'if (Darussalam)
is the adhan for the Fajr prayer, whereas the adhan before the appearance of Fajr is not an adhan for Fajr.
Be careful so that the matter does not become confused for you.
People call the adhan at the end of the night the first adhan for the Fajr prayer, but the truth is that it is not for the Fajr prayer.
Who said that it is not for the Fajr prayer?
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said it. He said:
Bilal calls the Adhan during the night to wake those who are sleeping and so that those who are praying Qiyam can return.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 641Sahih (Darussalam)
, meaning so that the sleeper gets up and eats the pre-dawn meal, and the one who is awake returns and eats the pre-dawn meal. Is that clear?
There is also another proof. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Malik ibn al-Huwayrith:
when the time for prayer comes, one amongst you should announce Adhan
Sahih Muslim 674a
. When does the prayer arrive, and when does the prayer arrive?
After the time has entered.
So, the adhan before the appearance of Fajr is not an adhan for Fajr.
Therefore, the practice of people today, and their saying:
The prayer is better than sleep
Sunan Ibn Majah 716Da'if (Darussalam)
in the adhan for Fajr, this is the correct thing.
As for the one who assumes that the first adhan in the hadith is the adhan before the appearance of Fajr, he has no share of consideration.
Some people said: The proof that it means the adhan that takes place at the end of the night for the voluntary prayer is that it is said:
The prayer is better than sleep
Sunan Ibn Majah 716Da'if (Darussalam)
, and the word:
betterخير
indicates the better.
We say: The word:
better خير
is used for the obligatory thing that is among the most obligatory of obligations, is it not so?
(10) O you who have believed, shall I guide you to a transaction that will save you from a painful punishment? (11) [It is that] you believe in Allah and His Messenger and strive in the cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives. That is best for you, if you should know.
[As-Saf 61:10-11]
, even though it is faith.
And Allah the Exalted said regarding the Jumu'ah prayer:
O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you
[Al-Jumu'ah 62:9]
.
So the excellence is in the obligatory and it is in the recommended.
In summary of the answer, may Allah bless you: The saying "Prayer is better than sleep" is prescribed in the adhan of what?
Fajr, and it is the first adhan with respect to the iqamah.
