Does one who repents for having left off prayer and fasting make them up?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner, who used the initials (S. A. A.) from Riyadh, says: O Shaykh! I am a young man of twenty years old who went to study outside the Kingdom. Ramadan passed for me in one of the first years of my mission, and I did not fast that month, unfortunately, out of negligence. Likewise, I was not performing the prayers in that year. But after I returned, I repented to Allah, praise be to Him. What should I do about the month I did not fast? Do I make it up consecutively or separately? Or what do you see, O Shaykh?

Answer:
As long as you do not pray, the one who does not pray is a disbeliever, and repentance wipes out what came before it. So there is no fasting or prayer to make up; you do not make up the fasting or the prayer. This is because the one who leaves off prayer commits disbelief, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Between a man and disbelief and shirk (associating partners with Allah) is the abandonment of prayer.بين الرجل وبين الكفر والشرك ترك الصلاة
, and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
The covenant that distinguishes between us and them is prayer; so whoever leaves it, he has committed Kufr.العهد الذي بيننا وبينهم الصلاة فمن تركها فقد كفر
Sunan Ibn Majah 1079Sahih (Darussalam)
. However, if you make up the fasting to get out of the disagreement of those who say that one does not commit major disbelief if he does not deny its obligation, there is no harm. But the correct view is that the one who leaves off prayer commits disbelief, even if he does not deny its obligation. And for the disbeliever, repentance is sufficient. Allah the Exalted said:
Say to those who have disbelieved [that] if they cease, what has previously occurred will be forgiven for themقُلْ لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا إِنْ يَنتَهُوا يُغْفَرْ لَهُمْ مَا قَدْ سَلَفَ
[Al-Anfal: 38], and He the Exalted said:
Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sinsقُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ لا تَقْنَطُوا مِنْ رَحْمَةِ اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا
[Az-Zumar: 53]. So repentance wipes out what came before it, and you do not have to make up anything if you were not praying, as you mentioned in the question. Yes.

The presenter: And regarding the prayers he left off.

The Shaykh: He does not make up the fasting or the prayer; repentance wipes out what came before it.

The presenter: Good, may Allah reward you with good, O Shaykh.
