Question:
What is permissible for a woman to do while she is in a state of major ritual impurity, such as preparing food and nursing children, and the like? Does this have any effect or not?

Answer:
The menstruating woman, the one in a state of major ritual impurity, and the woman with post-natal bleeding prepare everything just like other women who are in a state of ritual purity. They prepare everything, except for touching the mushaf, and except for reciting the Qur'an in the case of the one in a state of major ritual impurity; they are prevented from that. Otherwise, she cooks, brings the food, brings the coffee and tea, serves the water, serves the milk. She is not ritually impure; she is in a state of ritual purity. This is merely a state of major ritual impurity, which only obligates the full ritual bath. Otherwise, her sweat is pure, her body is pure, her hand is pure, and her head is pure. Likewise, the menstruating woman and the woman with post-natal bleeding are both in a state of ritual purity. The impurity is only in the blood. So, whatever blood touches her body or her clothes, she washes it. As for her hand, if it is sound and has no blood on it, it is pure. Her sweat is pure, her hair is pure, and her saliva is pure. All of that is pure from the woman. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to gnaw on a bone from Aisha while she was menstruating. She would eat from it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would eat from it. He would eat with her, and she would eat with him while she was menstruating. She would wash his head (peace and blessings be upon him) while she was menstruating. There is no blame in any of that, and praise be to Allah.
The point is: the menstruating woman, the woman with post-natal bleeding, and the one in a state of major ritual impurity are all in a state of ritual purity regarding the legal ruling. Their sweat is pure, their clothes are pure, and their bodies are pure. Whatever they touch, if they touch water, milk, or food with their hand, it does not become impure. It is not impure, and the menstruating woman and the woman with post-natal bleeding are not impure. They only have to perform the full ritual bath, which is an obligatory full ritual bath. So, the one in a state of major ritual impurity must perform the full ritual bath, whether male or female. The menstruating woman and the woman with post-natal bleeding likewise must perform the full ritual bath when they see the sign of purity at the time of purity. Whatever blood touches the clothes or body of the menstruating woman, she washes it. Likewise for the woman with post-natal bleeding. As for the one in a state of major ritual impurity, he has to perform the full ritual bath. Their sweat is pure, and praise be to Allah, and their entire bodies are pure. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. Nursing children, as if it is common among them...

The Shaykh: Likewise, nursing children. For her to nurse her child while she is in a state of major ritual impurity, just as she nurses him while she is menstruating, there is no blame in that. Yes.
