Is there zakah on a car and a closed shop?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
We return to the message from the listener Ja'far Muhammad 'Abd Allah, some of whose questions we presented in a previous episode. In this episode, he has a question about the zakah on a car. He says: Is there zakah on a car, and is there zakah on a shop that is in operation? May Allah reward you with good. And what about a closed shop?

Answer:
This requires detail. Cars, a closed shop, a shop in operation, lands, and buildings: if they are for sale and trade, they are subject to zakah. If they are prepared for sale, they are subject to zakah. They are called trade goods ('urud al-tijarah). When a lunar year passes over them, the value of their worth is subject to zakah, whether it is a car, a building, land, or something else.
As for if the building, land, or shop (the small shop) was not intended for trade, but rather intended to be rented out to benefit from its rent, or to be used by him, intending to use it himself, then there is no zakah on it. However, if he receives rent that reaches the nisab, and a lunar year passes over it, he pays zakah on the rent. Likewise, any furniture or utensils in it: if they are for use and not for trade, there is no zakah on them. But if there is furniture or utensils for trade and sale, they are trade goods. They are all subject to zakah when a lunar year passes over them; they are appraised and zakah is paid on them.
So the conclusion is: these things that people accumulate, such as cars, shops for buying and selling, small shops, or houses, or otherwise: if they did so for sale and trade, then there is zakah on them. The shop, the factory, the manufacturing plant, the house: if he intended it for trade, it is appraised at the end of the lunar year. If it is worth one hundred thousand, he pays zakah on one hundred thousand. If it is worth two hundred thousand, he pays zakah on that, and so on. It is appraised at the end of the lunar year at what it is worth to people, and zakah is obligatory on it because it is from trade goods. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
