The Criterion for Talebearing and Advice to the Talebearer
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner says in her question: If a woman speaks ill of a sister of mine, is it permissible for me to convey this speech to my sister, or is this considered talebearing? And what is the criterion for knowing whether speech is talebearing or not? May you be rewarded.
Answer:
It is obligatory, indeed it is obligatory, to rebuke the one who speaks ill of his brother’s honor while you are hearing it. You say: Fear Allah, this is not permissible, this is backbiting, fear Allah, this speech is not permissible for you. Allah says: [Al-Hujurat: 12]. And do not convey the speech, do not convey the speech to Zayd or 'Amr; because conveying speech is talebearing. But you rebuke the one who backbites and advise him not to return to that and to beware of backbiting about people. This is what is obligatory upon you; because Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says: [Al-Tawbah: 71]. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 49a meaning: he knew or witnessed Sunan an-Nasa'i 5008Sahih (Darussalam) and this is from the tongue Sunan an-Nasa'i 5008Sahih (Darussalam).
Likewise, if you see him cursing.. insulting.. you advise him, saying: Fear Allah, this is not permissible, guard your tongue. And likewise, if you see him engaging in some of the wrongs, such as smoking, drinking intoxicants, and using entertainment, you advise him, saying: Fear Allah, this is not permissible for you, beware, beware of the wrath of Allah, beware of the anger of Allah. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
