Answer to the one who has a question about the ruling on praying in shoes

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
He has a question regarding the topic of praying in shoes, Your Eminence, and he requests your guidance if you would be so kind.

The Shaykh: What?

The presenter: A question regarding the topic of praying in shoes.

Answer:
Praying in shoes is prescribed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray in his sandals, as is in the two Sahihs from Anas, who said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray in his sandals." So if one prays in his sandals and they are clean, there is no harm in that. He said: "One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed in his sandals, then Jibril came to him and informed him that there was filth on them, so he took them off. The people took off their sandals. When he finished the prayer, he asked them:
Why did you take off your sandals?
They said: "We saw you take off your sandals, so we took off our sandals." He said:
Jibril came to me and said: "There is filth on them," so I took them off. If any of you comes to the mosque, let him look, and if he sees impurity on his sandals, let him wipe it, then pray in them.
And in another wording:
Let him turn over his sandals, and if he sees impurity on them, let him wipe it, then pray in them.
Sunan ad-Darimi 2:188
This is an authentic hadith, and it indicates that the best is to pray in sandals and leather socks. Likewise, the hadith:
The Jews and the Christians do not pray in their sandals, so differ from them.
This indicates the lawfulness of praying in sandals.
But if the mosque is carpeted, and one fears that it will be soiled, because some people do not care and do not look at their sandals, then if he takes them off and prays barefoot so as not to dirty the carpet, and so as not to drive people away from praying in the mosque, this is probably better, if Allah wills, from the perspective of considering public benefit, not driving people away from mosques, and considering that most people, except as your Lord wills, do not care about their sandals and do not strive to keep them clean. So if he places his sandals in a specific place to pray, or places them between his feet to pray, there is nothing wrong with that.
And this is probably better, if Allah wills, out of concern for the cleanliness of the mosques, and also out of concern for not driving the worshippers away. For many people may be driven away from mosques if they see them being trodden upon by sandals. These carpets are affected by the slightest thing, unlike if the mosque were of gravel or sand, in which case it is not affected much. The matter is broad in this, as was the case in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the time of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) . Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.

The presenter: Your Eminence, would you be so kind as to repeat the method for purifying the shoes?

The Shaykh: Yes, he purifies them by wiping, meaning: he rubs them on the ground, or rubs them with milk or the like, until the impurity is completely removed. When it is removed and no trace remains, it becomes purification for them, as in the hadith:
If one of you steps on filth with his two leather socks then the earth is their purification.
Bulugh al-Maram 2:83
And in the other wording:
Let him wipe it, then pray in them.
.
So the point is: rubbing them on the ground and rubbing them with earth until the impurity is removed and no trace remains, then it becomes purification for them. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. Is this if the impurity has a substance or if it does not have a substance?

The Shaykh: If it has a substance. As for if it does not have a substance, the matter is easier; wiping it on the ground is sufficient. But if it has a substance, it must be rubbed until it falls off, like dung and manure, and the like.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, and may He benefit us with your knowledge.
