The Permissibility of Using the Left Hand for the Tally of Dhikr
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
With Allah’s blessing, we begin this session with a message received from Yemen from the questioner (N. A. N), who asks in this question: Is using the right hand for dhikr a confirmed sunnah, and using the left hand a religious innovation? Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) use his right hand for dhikr? And what is the evidence for this?
May Allah reward you.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) what indicates that using the right hand for dhikr is better. If one uses the left hand, there is no harm, or if one uses both hands together, the right and the left, there is no harm in any of that.
It is established from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) liked to prefer the right hand in putting on his sandals, combing his hair, performing his ablution, and in all his affairs.” It was also reported from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he “used to tally his dhikr with his right hand,” and he said to the women: meaning: with both the left and the right hand. So the matter is broad in this regard; tallying dhikr with both the right and left hand, or with the right hand alone, is all permissible, but the right hand is better. Yes.
