The Importance of Memorizing the Qur'an and Scientific Texts for the Student of Knowledge

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
In his second question, this questioner asks: Is it necessary for the student of knowledge to memorize the concise books in the various disciplines of knowledge, or is understanding and jurisprudence sufficient, such as the book *Bulugh al-Maram*, or *Alfiyyat Ibn Malik* in grammar and morphology?
He notes that time does not allow for combining both benefits, and the same applies to memorizing the Qur'an and becoming proficient in its interpretation.

Answer:
The important thing is understanding the meanings and memorizing the meanings and rulings. If he is able to memorize the texts, that is a great good, just as it is prescribed for him to memorize the Qur'an. But if he is not able to, the important thing is that he recites it frequently, understands the meaning, and acts according to the Islamic ruling, even if he does not memorize the texts or the Qur'an. However, if he is able to memorize the Qur'an and *Bulugh al-Maram*—the foundation of hadith—and *Zad al-Mustaqni* in jurisprudence, and *Alfiyyat Ibn Malik* in grammar, that is a great good, because this helps him in understanding. And if he is able to understand but not to memorize, there is no harm, and praise be to Allah.

The presenter: May Allah reward you.
