The ruling on forming the intention to fast after Fajr in obligatory and voluntary fasts

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
If a person intends to fast after the Fajr prayer, is that valid for him?

Answer:
If it is a voluntary fast, and he has not eaten anything, and has not consumed anything that breaks the fast, then it is valid if he intends to fast after Fajr, or after the morning prayer, or after that. He will receive the reward from the time he intended; he will have the reward of fasting from the time he intended. This is specific to voluntary fasts.
As for the obligatory fast, no, it is necessary that he intend it the night before, it is necessary that he intend it before Fajr in the case of an obligatory fast, whether it is Ramadan, or an expiation, or a vow, or making up a missed Ramadan fast, the intention before Fajr is necessary.

The presenter: And as for the voluntary fast, does he form the intention whenever he wishes?

The Shaykh: Yes, whenever he wishes, before he consumes anything that breaks the fast, before he consumes anything that breaks the fast, no eating, or anything else, yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
