The ruling on adding to al-Fatihah in the third and fourth rak'ahs

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
He asks about sujud al-sahw, if you please. He says: Is there an obligation on one who adds to the prayer by reciting a short surah, or verses, after al-Fatihah in the third or fourth rak'ah, for example?

Answer:
He does not owe sujud al-sahw; because this addition is either prescribed or not prescribed. If it is prescribed, as in the first and second rak'ahs, this is a known matter; if he forgets it, he owes nothing. And if it is not prescribed, in the third and fourth rak'ahs of 'Asr, and in Maghrib and 'Isha', then performing it does not harm, does not invalidate the prayer, and does not affect it. The matter is broad in this regard. For this reason, some scholars have held that adding to the recitation in the third and fourth rak'ahs of Dhuhr is prescribed at times, based on the hadith of Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "We estimated the recitation of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Dhuhr to be the length of Surah al-Muzzammil, and in the last two to be half of that."
So his saying: "half of that" indicates that he recites an addition along with al-Fatihah. Therefore, if one does this at times, there is no blame on him.
It is reported from al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Muwatta' with a good chain: that he recited in the third rak'ah of Maghrib:
[Who say], "Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower.رَبَّنَا لا تُزِغْ قُلُوبَنَا بَعْدَ إِذْ هَدَيْتَنَا وَهَبْ لَنَا مِنْ لَدُنْكَ رَحْمَةً إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْوَهَّابُ
[Al Imran:8]. It is also mentioned in some hadiths that some of the imams of the Ansar used to recite an additional
Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One,قل هو الله أحد
[Al-Ikhlas 112:1]
along with al-Fatihah in every rak'ah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) approved of this, saying: "It is the description of the Most Merciful, and I love to recite it." He used to recite it in every rak'ah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) approved of it.
So the matter is broad in this regard. If a person adds it, whether in the third rak'ah, or the fourth in 'Asr and 'Isha, or in the third in Maghrib, there is no harm in that, and he does not have to perform the prostration for forgetfulness. However, leaving it out is better. As for the Dhuhr prayer, the matter is broad in it. In the third and fourth rak'ahs of Dhuhr, if he adds it sometimes, acting on the hadith of Abu Sa'id, that is good. And he should mostly not add it, acting on the hadith of Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) in the two Sahihs that he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite al-Fatihah of the Book in the last two rak'ahs of Dhuhr and 'Asr. Yes.
