The Ruling on Family Planning in Islam

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
He asks in a lengthy question about those who perform certain procedures on women for the purpose of family planning, and he asks about the ruling on family planning in Islam?

Answer:
It is not permissible to limit the number of children; rather, the man and the woman should strive for more offspring. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Marry the one who is fertile and loving, for I will boast of your great numbers.تزوجوا الولود الودود؛ فإني مكاثر بكم الأنبياء يوم القيامة
Sunan an-Nasa'i 3227Hasan (Darussalam)
And in the other wording:
For I will compete with the nations in numbers on the Day of Resurrectionفإني مكاثر بكم الأمم يوم القيامة
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 10:852
So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) encouraged marrying a woman who is fertile and loving. Then, the believer should strive to have righteous offspring who benefit him in this world and benefit him in the Hereafter, who increase the number of Muslims. He should strive for a righteous wife, and for the care of his offspring, and to raise them with good Islamic upbringing. So, limiting the number of children has no basis.
And the meaning of family planning is: that he agrees with the woman on a known number. No, rather, he should strive with the woman, both of them, that Allah grants them more offspring in a way that does not harm her. If there is harm, such that she carries this and that, and it is harmful to her; there is no harm in taking things that prevent pregnancy for a specific time, such as the time of breastfeeding, or part of the breastfeeding period until she is strong enough for upbringing. There is no harm in this without limiting the offspring to a known number.
But there is no harm in taking things that prevent pregnancy for a specific time; to avert the harm upon her, and out of concern for raising the children with Islamic upbringing. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. So, Your Eminence calls for regulation, not limitation?

The Shaykh: Yes, the regulation that necessity calls for, that pressing need calls for, and that necessity and Sharia'ah benefit call for. As for limitation, no.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
