The scholars have differed regarding the number required for the validity of the Friday prayer. Some said forty, some said less than that, and some said more than that. The correct view is that it is established with three: the imam and two others, and whatever exceeds that. This is the strongest opinion in this matter. If there are three or more in a village, who are residents and of legal age, then the Friday prayer is established for them. This is due to the generality of the scriptural evidence, and because three constitute a gathering; thus, the hadiths and the noble verse encompass them. This is the strongest opinion in this issue.
