The Ruling on Discount Cards Offered by Companies

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The first message in this episode is from one of our brother listeners, who called himself Al-Sudais. Our brother has several questions, one of which is: A company offers discount cards for a fixed annual subscription fee, granting the holder a discount of a certain percentage at some commercial establishments but not others. What is the ruling on benefiting from them? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon whoever follows his guidance. As for what follows:
The ruling on this transaction is that it is not permissible; in fact, it is riba (usury or interest). This is because one pays money in exchange for a discount at certain stores when purchasing from them, in return for the money he provided to the company. The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta, under my chairmanship and participation, has issued many fatwas on this matter, all of which indicate prohibition. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
