When I pray, my children play and pass in front of me while I am praying, especially when I try to stop them, they defy me. Is there any sin on me for this, and what breaks a man's prayer?

The questioner : When I pray, my children play and pass in front of me while I am praying, especially when I try to stop them, they defy me. Is there any sin on me for this? And what breaks a man's prayer?

The Shaykh : Yes, there is no doubt that your prayer while your children are playing, making noise, and talking in front of you is a mistake, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once prayed while wearing a decorated cloak. He looked at its ornaments, and when he finished the prayer, he said:
Take this woollen garment of mine to Abu Jahm and bring me Abu Jahm’s Anbijani* garment, for it has distracted me just now from my prayer. اذهبوا بخميصتي هذه إلى أبي جهم وأتوني بأنبجانية أبي جهم لأنها ألهتني آنفاً عن صلاتي
Mishkat al-Masabih 757
.
This indicates that it is not permissible for a person to pray in a state that distracts him from his prayer. So we tell the man: if you want to pray in your house, pray in a room or chamber away from the noise and distraction.
As for what breaks the prayer, nothing breaks the prayer except the passing of a mature woman, or a black dog, or a donkey. Anything else does not break the prayer, but it diminishes it. Yes.
