Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This sister, Umm 'Asem, says to you, O Shaykh: My first question is: What is riba? And the second section says: In transactions, is this considered riba: exchanging one kilogram of flour for one kilogram of dough?
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
Riba is among the ugliest of evils and among the ugliest of major sins. Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) forbade it and said: [al-Baqarah:275]. And He the Exalted said in His great Book: [al-Baqarah:275]. So it is obligatory to guard against it. And He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said: [Al-Baqarah 2:278] Then, if you do not do so, be aware of war from Allah and His Messenger. And if you repent, then yours is the principal of your wealth; you will not wrong others, nor will you be wronged. [al-Baqarah:278-279].
Riba is selling an item of currency for its like; such as gold for gold, or silver for silver, or wheat for wheat, or barley for barley, or dates for dates, or salt for salt, or corn for corn. This is riba if he sells it for its like in unequal amounts, such as selling a sa' of dates for two sa' of dates, or a pound for two pounds, or a dirham for two dirhams, meaning in unequal amounts; this is riba by the consensus of the Muslims. Or if he sells it for its like, but without immediate exchange, saying: a dirham for a dirham, but they do not exchange possession, he does not take possession of it in the assembly. So immediate exchange in the assembly is necessary, and they must be equal if they are of the same type, ten for ten, a hundred for a hundred, and they must exchange possession in the assembly, a sa' for a sa', a sa' of dates for a sa' of dates in the assembly they exchange possession, two sa' for two sa'.
As for if they are of two types; gold for silver, there is no harm in unequal amounts, but it must be hand to hand, a pound for an exchange of silver, or for other work not of silver, hand to hand, he takes a pound for a dollar or other, he takes another type of currency in the assembly hand to hand, dollars for dirhams, or for dinars, there is no harm if they are unequal if they are of different types, but hand to hand, or a sa' of dates for two sa' of wheat hand to hand in the assembly, or a sa' of corn for two sa' of dates, hand to hand, there is no harm even if they are unequal, so a kilogram of wheat for a kilogram of wheat dough is not a problem hand to hand. Yes.
