The Difference Between Tawassul and Wasilah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Finally, he asks Your Eminence, saying: What is the difference between tawassul (seeking nearness to Allah through a means) and wasilah?

Answer:
Tawassul is the supplication of a person. It is said: he made tawassul, he supplicated. It is said: “I ask You by Your names,” this is tawassul. “I ask You by my faith in You,” this is tawassul. And the wasilah is faith, piety, and the beautiful names. The wasilah to Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) is supplicating by them. You are the one making tawassul. Tawassul is your supplication, and the wasilah is what you supplicated by.
So if you say: “O Allah, I ask You by Your beautiful names and Your exalted attributes to forgive me,” then by your supplication you are making tawassul, and this supplication is called tawassul. And what is being supplicated by is His names and attributes; this is called wasilah. That is to say, supplicating by the names and attributes is the wasilah, and this same supplication is called tawassul. And what is being used for tawassul is faith, or the names and attributes, or your other righteous deeds.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good and do you good.
