The Ruling on Sacrificing on Behalf of the Deceased

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner asks: Is it obligatory for the deceased's family to offer a sacrifice for him—meaning, to slaughter the 'Id sacrifice—on the day of 'Id al-Adha?

Answer:
It is not obligatory for them, but if they do sacrifice, they will be rewarded, as a voluntary act, similar to giving charity on his behalf. Otherwise, it is not obligatory for them, unless he left a bequest to that effect, bequeathing in a house or farm that they must execute the bequest in one-third or less.
As for if he did not leave a bequest, it is not obligatory for them, but if they voluntarily sacrifice on his behalf, or give charity on his behalf, they will have reward, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased).إذا مات ابن آدم انقطع عمله إلا من ثلاث: صدقةٍ جارية، أو علمٍ ينتفع به، أو ولدٍ صالح يدعو له
Riyad as-Salihin 1383
"And a man asked him, saying: O Messenger of Allah! My mother has died, will she have reward if I give charity on her behalf? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Yes.نعم.
This indicates that if one gives charity on behalf of his mother, or his father, or so-and-so, or so-and-so, he has reward. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you and bless you.
