The State of the Believer Between Fear and Hope
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner says: “O Shaykh, I have more fear than hope. Is it necessary for them to be equal?”
Answer:
There is no harm in that. Some of the scholars of knowledge say: It should be that fear predominates in a state of health; because Allah said—(Exalted and Majestic is He): [Ar-Rahman:46] And He said: [Ibrahim:14] And the Exalted said: [Al-Mulk:12] And the Sublime said: [Al-Bayyinah 98:7] Their reward from their Lord is Gardens of Eden, with rivers flowing beneath them, to abide therein forever. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. That is for whoever feared his Lord. [Al-Bayyinah:8]. That fear predominates in a state of health is better according to the scholars of knowledge. And if they are equal, there is no harm, between hope and fear.
As for in the state of illness and at the time of death, it should be that hope predominates, and having a good opinion of Allah. Hope should predominate in the state of illness and the nearness of the term. A person should always have a good opinion of his Lord, always, and especially in the state of illness. Hope should predominate, and having a good opinion should predominate. We ask Allah for health and safety for us and for the Muslims.
The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good, Your Eminence.

There is no harm in that. Some of the scholars of knowledge say: It should be that fear predominates in a state of health; because Allah said—(Exalted and Majestic is He):
But for he who has feared the position of his Lord are two gardens -
وَلِمَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ جَنَّتَانِThat is for he who fears My position and fears My threat."
ذَلِكَ لِمَنْ خَافَ مَقَامِي وَخَافَ وَعِيدِIndeed, those who fear their Lord unseen will have forgiveness and great reward.
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُمْ بِالْغَيْبِ لَهُمْ مَغْفِرَةٌ وَأَجْرٌ كَبِيرٌIndeed, they who have believed and done righteous deeds - those are the best of creatures.
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ أُوْلَئِكَ هُمْ خَيْرُ الْبَرِيَّةِ As for in the state of illness and at the time of death, it should be that hope predominates, and having a good opinion of Allah.
