Cases of the prostration for forgetfulness before and after the closing salam

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
We now move on to a message received by the program from one of the female listeners, in which she asks a number of questions. In one of them, she asks: Is the prostration for forgetfulness before the closing salam or after it? And if it is before it, as I understand, does one recite any part of the tashahhud after it, or does one say the salam directly?

Answer:
The prostration varies; the prostration for forgetfulness is sometimes this way and sometimes that way. It is better for it to be before the closing salam, and one does not recite anything after it. One finishes the tashahhud and the supplication, and when he completes it, he prostrates for forgetfulness, two prostrations, before he says the salam. This is the case for most forgetfulness. It is prescribed that the prostration be after the closing salam in two cases:
The first is: if one says the salam due to a deficiency, saying the salam due to a missing rak'ah or two rak'ahs, and then they remind him, he completes it, then says the salam, and then his prostration is after the salam. This is better, and if he prostrates before the salam, there is no harm.
The second case is: if one acts on his predominant belief, meaning: he completes the prayer based on his predominant belief. Then he prostrates for forgetfulness after the salam. If he experiences some doubt as to whether his prayer is deficient or complete, and his predominant belief is that it is complete and nothing is missing from it, then this predominant belief obligates him to perform the prostration for forgetfulness, but it is better for it to be after the salam. This is because it was reported in the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud regarding one who forgot, where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
he should aim at what is correct and complete his prayer in that respect, then give the salutation and afterwards make two prostrationsفليتحر الصواب، فليتم ما عليه ثم ليسلم، ثم يسجد سجدتين
Mishkat al-Masabih 1016
. And when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forgot and said the salam after two rak'ahs, and the people reminded him, he completed his prayer, then said the salam, then prostrated for forgetfulness after that. And in another incident, he said the salam after three rak'ahs, was reminded, completed his prayer, then prostrated for forgetfulness after that, peace and blessings be upon him. Yes.
