The ruling on one who took money and wanted to return it but could not find its owner

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A message reached the program from one of the listening brothers, Muhammad Abdullah Abdullah. Our brother says: A person was working in a cooperative place and was ignorant, and he took money from this place in an un-Islamic manner. He gave this money to his father and did not inform him at that time that he had taken it in an unlawful way. Now he wants to return this money to its owners, knowing that the cooperative place is now closed and its owners have moved away from it. What should he do? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
First: He must repent to Allah for that. He must offer sincere repentance for this bad deed, and that is by feeling regret for what has passed, making a sincere resolve not to return to it, and striving to get rid of this money. If he knows the people of the shop, he gives it to them, if he is able to do so. If he is not able to do that, he gives it in charity on their behalf, paying it to some of the poor as charity on their behalf with the intention. But if he is able to deliver it to them, he sends it to them according to their shares. And if they have a head to whom they refer, he sends it to their head so that he may distribute it among them.
The point is that he should strive to deliver it to his family in a way that enables him to do so. Allah says:
So fear Allah as much as you are ableفَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ
[al-Taghabun:16]. If he is unable and cannot do so, he should give it in charity to some of the poor, intending it on behalf of his companions, and Allah will benefit them with this . Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
