Question:
Muhammad 'Ayd inquires at the beginning about the noble verse: I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan: [Surat al-Nisa: 20]?
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows:
The scholars stated that the meaning of this noble verse is: if a man divorces a woman and wishes to replace her with another, he has no right to take back anything of what he gave her. What he gave her became her property because he made lawful the enjoyment of her private parts, even if it was a qintar, meaning even if it was a great amount of wealth. So if he is pleased with her and then wishes to part with her, he has no right to take anything from her. Rather, what he gave her as mahr is her property, whether it is immediate or deferred; it is all hers because he made lawful the enjoyment of her private parts. This is the meaning of the verse. Yes.
