The Ruling on Mutual Hatred Due to Disagreement in Doubtful Matters
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Do practical matters that are doubtful—such as the excuse of ignorance, and we seek refuge in Allah from that—necessitate disagreement and lead to boycotting and hatred among those who share the same Salafi belief?
Answer:
What is obligatory in this regard is good conduct, good opinion of others, and avoiding violence and harshness. Everyone is seeking the truth. Allah, Exalted and Majestic is He, says in His great Book: [Al-Nahl: 125]. And He says regarding the People of the Book: [Al-'Ankabut: 46]. They are disbelievers, yet we were forbidden to argue with them except in the best manner, and they are disbelievers. How much more so with our brothers?
What is obligatory is to argue in the best manner, to have a good opinion of others, and to interpret your brother’s actions in the best possible way, until he is guided and accepts the truth. Do not despair, and do not boycott him. Rather, you must engage in argumentation in the best manner, with good conduct, patience, tolerance, and without anger, until the truth becomes clear to everyone. The truth is the believer’s lost property. It is not a condition that you be the one to prevail. You must seek the truth and strive earnestly in seeking it, whether you prevail or are overruled, whether the truth appears through your efforts or through your brother’s. You must be sincere, and your goal must be the manifestation of the truth, whether it is with you or with your brother.
This is the affair of the believer: he strives for the truth to appear, whether through his own path or through the path of his brothers. When the truth appears, he submits to it and responds to it. He does not become arrogant, nor does he persist in his falsehood or cling to it.
Among the most important matters is caring for good conduct, having a good opinion of others, avoiding bad suspicion, choosing kind words, and being patient with any harm or offensive words that may come from your brother, or anything similar, until you all reach the truth. And, praise be to Allah, you desire and seek it.
As for when conduct becomes bad, suspicions become bad, and speech becomes bad, this is among the causes of the truth being lost, and among the causes of division and disagreement which Allah has condemned and criticized. We ask Allah for safety.
