What is the position of a student of knowledge when there are many desires?

Question:
From time to time, some scholars appear in the Islamic world attempting to drag Islam to the reality of people, rather than elevating this reality to what is compatible with Islam, through: figurative interpretation of the texts, or weakening the authentic, or belittling the one who holds fast to the text. So what is the position of the student of knowledge toward those scholars?

Answer:
This is not new; this is from old times, from the time of the Companions, from the time of the Companions, and this exists. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us that the Ummah will split into seventy-three sects, and that there will be among the people: those who recite the Qur'an but it does not go beyond their throats. One of us would belittle his prayer compared to their prayer, his fasting compared to their fasting, and his recitation compared to their recitation. They will emerge from Islam as an arrow emerges from its quiver. So this is not something to be rejected.
In the time of the Salaf—in the time of the Companions—there were those who interpreted the texts other than their interpretation, and dragged them to their false belief, interpreting them according to their false interpretation: from the Khawarij, then the Shi'ah in the time of 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), then those who came after them from the Mu'tazilah and the Jahmiyyah, and those who came after them from the various types of sects. Every sect sees that it is the one that has hit the mark, and wants to drag Islam to it, and to call to the Islam that it believes in.
And no one escaped from this—this splitting and this calamity—except those who held fast to the great Qur'an and the pure Sunnah, and judged by them—by their texts—and did not interpret, and held fast to the apparent meaning of the texts, and were upright upon them, and followed the path of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and their satisfaction in that. So they took the saying of the Messenger upon its apparent meaning, and took the Qur'an upon its apparent meaning, and followed the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in that, and were upright upon their clear path. These are the ones who are saved, and they are the people of the Sunnah and the community.
And whoever deviates from this path from the interpreters, the deniers of attributes, and the distorters, they are upon paths of misguidance, and they vary in their misguidance, until they reached seventy-two sects, all of them upon misguidance. And no one was saved except the seventy-third sect, and they are those who were upon what the Prophet and his Companions were upon in saying, action, and belief.
So it is obligatory for the student of knowledge to seek out what the Salaf of this Ummah from the Companions and their followers with excellence followed, and that is holding fast to the apparent meaning of the Book and the Sunnah, and judging by what they indicated in saying, action, and belief, and casting aside everything that contradicts that from the interpretations of the interpreters, the distortion of the distorters, the exaggeration of the exaggerators, and the harshness of the harsh ones, whether that is Shi'ah, or Jahmi, or Khariji, or Mu'tazili, or Murji', or otherwise, and they are many groups.
And with that, he must ask his Lord to help him, to take refuge in Allah, and ask Him for steadfastness upon the truth, and insight into it; so that he does not deviate as they deviated, and perish as they perished. So he must ask his Lord for success, and supplicate to Him in the times of response and others, and adhere to the truth, and search for it, and adhere to its people, and follow their path, and follow their clear steps. And by that, safety is attained for him, as He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said:
And the first forerunners [in the faith] among the Muhajireen and the Ansar and those who followed them with good conductوَالسَّابِقُونَ الْأَوَّلُونَ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنْصَارِ وَالَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُمْ بِإِحْسَانٍ
[At-Tawbah 9:100]
Pay attention to His saying: with excellence
who followed them with good conduct - Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment.
[al-Tawbah:100]. These are the ones who are saved, they are the happy ones, and they are those mentioned in His saying (Exalted and Majestic is He):
The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Those - Allah will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.
[al-Tawbah:71], and they are those mentioned in His saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.
[al-Ahzab:35].
These are the characteristics of the people of faith, ten characteristics in this verse for men and women, leaving nothing out. It concluded with the remembrance:
and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do soوَالذَّاكِرِينَ اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا وَالذَّاكِرَاتِ
[Al-Ahzab 33:35]
which encompasses all types of remembrance, and all types of obedience. So the truthful are those who were truthful in following the Messenger of Allah, and being upright upon the command of Allah, and reflecting upon the Book of Allah, and caring for it. And the patient are likewise, and they are included in His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He):
Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing womenإِنَّ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمَاتِ وَالْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ
[Al-Ahzab 33:35]
and what follows it, so it is like an explanation and specification: the devout, the truthful, the patient, the humble, and so on. All these characteristics are a specification attached to a general term, so they are characteristics included in Islam and faith. He drew attention to them because of their great status.
He said:
And the truthful men and the truthful womenوَالصَّادِقِينَ وَالصَّادِقَاتِ
So the truthful one is the one who was upright upon the command of Allah with sincerity and care, and patience and perseverance. His outward appearance matched his inward state, and his inward state matched his outward appearance.
And the patient men and the patient womenوَالصَّابِرِينَ وَالصَّابِرَاتِ
upon what they are upon of truth, they did not deviate from that.
And the humble men and the humble womenوَالْخَاشِعِينَ وَالْخَاشِعَاتِ
to Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the submissive to Allah, the humble, the obedient to His command in all matters.
And those who give in charity, both men and womenوَالْمُتَصَدِّقِينَ وَالْمُتَصَدِّقَاتِ
includes the men and women who purify themselves, and whoever gives voluntary charity, all of it is included in that.
And the fasting men and the fasting womenوَالصَّائِمِينَ وَالصَّائِمَاتِ
likewise, they are included in the believing men and believing women, and the faithful men and faithful women. And included in that are: the patient, the humble, the truthful, the praying, and those who uphold the command of Allah in all things, and those who abandon all the prohibitions of Allah. And likewise, those who guard their private parts, and the women who guard theirs likewise, the people of chastity and distance from the causes of fornication.
Then He concluded it with His saying:
and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do soوَالذَّاكِرِينَ اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا وَالذَّاكِرَاتِ
[Al-Ahzab 33:35]
, so this gathered all categories of good.
