Question:
What is the interpretation of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Indeed, those who have said, "Our Lord is Allah " and then remained on a right course - the angels will descend upon them, [saying], "Do not fear and do not grieve but receive good tidings of Paradise, which you were promised.إِنَّ الَّذِينَ قَالُوا رَبُّنَا اللَّهُ ثُمَّ اسْتَقَامُوا تَتَنَزَّلُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ أَلَّا تَخَافُوا وَلَا تَحْزَنُوا وَأَبْشِرُوا بِالْجَنَّةِ الَّتِي كُنْتُمْ تُوعَدُونَ
[Surah Fussilat: 30]? What is meant by steadfastness?

Answer:
Steadfastness is: standing firm upon the truth and persisting in it. One says, “Our Lord is Allah,” and remains steadfast. It is not the one who says, “My Lord is Allah,” and then abandons the obligatory duties and commits the forbidden acts who is steadfast. The one who says, “My Lord is Allah,” and says, “There is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah,” and then engages in open sins such as unlawful sexual intercourse, theft, oppressing people, and drinking intoxicants, is not steadfast. He is in great danger of entering the Fire. For this reason, He said:
and then they remained steadfastثُمَّ اسْتَقَامُوا
This is steadfastness: leaving what Allah has forbidden and performing what Allah has made obligatory.
