Question:
How do we interpret this hadith: the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 105b And how can it be that he does not enter Paradise when he may have died upon the oneness of Allah?
Answer:
These are called: hadiths of warning. The scholars call them: hadiths of warning regarding sins. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) warns them with what Allah revealed to him. So His saying:Sahih Muslim 105b means: a talebearer, and what is similar to it, such as: Sahih Muslim 57a, and what is similar to that of warning, all of it is for warning against these sins.
The scholars have interpreted them, meaning: he will not enter Paradise, meaning: with the first of those who enter, or: until he repents. So its meaning is not that he will not enter it at all; because the Messenger informed us that the one who affirms the oneness of Allah enters Paradise, and that the people of evil deeds may be punished, then after purification Allah takes them out of the Fire into Paradise. And He may forgive them, as He the Exalted and Majestic said: [Al-Nisa: 48]. So sins are under shirk, under the will of Allah. They may enter the Fire and be punished, then Allah forgives them, and He takes them out of the Fire. And He may forgive them before that.
So the talebearer is of that, and so is all that came of warning regarding being deprived of entering Paradise due to sins, such as what Allah mentioned regarding the fornicator and the killer. He said:[Al-Furqan 25:68] YUDHA'AF LAHU AL-'ADHAB YAWM AL-QIYAMAH WA YAKHLUD FIIHI MUHANAN * ILLA MAN TABA [Al-Furqan: 68-70], and His saying (peace and blessings be upon him) : [Al-Nisa: 93], and what is similar to all of that is from the category of warning. If he repents, Allah turns to him in mercy and he enters Paradise. And if he dies upon his sin of intoxicants or talebearing or killing or what is similar to that, he is under the will of Allah: if Allah wills, He forgives him for his good deeds and his affirmation of the oneness of Allah, and he enters Paradise, as He does with some of them. And if He wills, He puts him in the Fire and punishes him therein according to the magnitude of the sins he died upon and did not repent from. Then Allah takes him out of the Fire by the consensus of the people of the Sunnah: that they are taken out of the Fire. The people of the oneness of Allah, if they are punished for their sins, are not to remain in it forever. But their duration may be long, and it is called: eternal abode. The length of the duration is called: eternal abode, as He said: [Al-Furqan: 69]. The length of the duration is called: eternal abode, but it is not like the eternal abode of the disbelievers. The sinner may remain forever, but his eternal abode is not like the eternal abode of the disbelievers. The eternal abode of the disbelievers has no end, forever and ever. As for the eternal abode of the sinner, it may be long, then Allah takes him out of the Fire, as He informed regarding the killer that he will remain forever, and the fornicator, but it does not last, rather it has an end, then Allah takes him out of the Fire.
This is the saying of the people of the Sunnah and the community, contrary to the Khawarij and the Mu'tazilah and those who follow in their footsteps. For they say: if he enters the Fire, he does not come out of it. And the Khawarij say: he is a disbeliever. The fornicator is a disbeliever with them, and the thief is a disbeliever, and the talebearer is a disbeliever. This is a false saying with the people of the Sunnah and the community. He is not a disbeliever if he does not consider it permissible. The sinner did not consider it permissible; he is not a disbeliever, but he is under the will of Allah if he did not repent, according to all the people of the Sunnah and the community. And he does not remain in the Fire forever if he enters it while affirming the oneness of Allah and not associating partners with Allah. He does not remain in the Fire forever, but it has an end. Allah takes him out of the Fire into Paradise by His grace and mercy (peace and blessings be upon him) by the consensus of the people of the Sunnah and the community, contrary to the Khawarij and the Mu'tazilah and those who follow their path, such as the Ibadis and others who follow the path of the Mu'tazilah.
Q: It is mentioned, O Shaykh, regarding Ibn al-Qayyim: that the Fire of the sinners among the people of the oneness of Allah is extinguished?
The Shaykh: He stated this explicitly in "Al-Wabil," and Allah knows best. But in the state of the one who affirms the oneness of Allah, he does not remain forever, it has an end. Whether his Fire is extinguished or his Fire is not extinguished. If it is extinguished, then your Lord is Able over all things. And if it is not extinguished, it is added to the punishment of the disbelievers, and it is appended to the punishment of the disbelievers, if a text comes that it is extinguished. Otherwise, the original state is that it is not extinguished. But if a text comes indicating that it is extinguished, then yes. Otherwise, the saying of a scholar may be wrong or right. If a text comes that it is extinguished, we say so. Otherwise, it remains, he comes out of it, and it is appended to the rest of the Fire, to the punishment of the disbelievers - we ask Allah for safety.

And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever should do that will meet a penalty.
