The Grading of the Hadith: "The Expiation for One Whom You Backbited Is to Seek Forgiveness for Him"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The hadith: "The expiation for one whom you backbited is to seek forgiveness for him"?

Answer:
The hadith is weak, but the meaning is: if it is feasible, or if it is feasible that he makes it permissible, then he should do so; otherwise, he should make du'a for him and seek forgiveness for him in his absence, and remind those in the gatherings where he backbited him of the good deeds he knows of him, and mention his good qualities that he knows of him. This serves as the expiation.
