Question:
Some people criticize the Salafiyyah and the Salafis, and some of them have even come to say:
And everyone is a leader for whom
Their path is the correct one
So we ask you for a comprehensive answer regarding this?
Answer:
The path of the Salaf is the most knowledgeable, most wise, and safest path, and it is the one that is followed. The errors of the Asha'irah are not permissible to follow, and al-Ash'ari (may Allah have mercy on him) disavowed them and turned away from them, but they attached this name to him, and he is innocent of it. Their figurative interpretation of the attributes is an error and a mistake according to the people of the Sunnah, so it is not permissible to follow them in the figurative interpretation of the attributes, such as love, satisfaction, anger, and the like. No, they are to be taken at their apparent meaning according to the people of the Sunnah and the community. The attributes are to be passed over at their apparent meaning, and the names of Allah are likewise not to be interpreted figuratively. He (Glorified and Exalted is He) shows mercy in a manner befitting Him, and He becomes angry as He wills, and He is satisfied as He wills, in the manner befitting Him (Glorified and Exalted is He). They are not to be interpreted figuratively.
This is ta'wil (figurative interpretation); whoever says: the mercy is interpreted as the will to bestow favor, and the anger as the will to take revenge, this is a false ta'wil. The meaning is: a real mercy, and a real anger befitting Allah, which does not resemble the anger of creation, nor the mercy of creation. And so is His satisfaction, and so is His knowledge, and so is His hearing and seeing, and His hand and foot, and so is His speech. All His attributes, (Exalted and Majestic is He), are befitting Him; He is not like His creation in any of them, (Glorified and Exalted is He), and it is not permissible to interpret them figuratively. Allah said: :[Al-Ikhlas 112:1] [al-Ikhlas], so He has no equal, (Glorified and Exalted is He), and He said: : [al-Shura: 11], and He, the Exalted, said: [al-Nahl: 74], so He, (Glorified and Exalted is He), has no likeness, no similar, and no equal.
So those who exalt the path of the Asha'irah which some scholars followed are in error; they have erred. So they must repent to Allah, and they must return to the truth, and they must proceed upon the methodology of the Companions, the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the righteous Salaf.
So the righteous Salaf are the followers of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and they are those who emulated the Companions, and followed the path of the Companions, and proceeded upon their methodology. They are called the people of the Sunnah and the community, because the people of the Sunnah: the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the community means: they agreed upon it and proceeded upon it, following the example of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them and grant them satisfaction). These are the people of the truth, so whoever opposes them will be upon falsehood in that in which he opposes them: such as the Asha'irah, the Jahmiyyah, the Mu'tazilah, the Karramiyyah, the Murji'ah, and others.
