The Ruling on Dyeing Black for the Young and the Elderly

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Black henna, if I dye my beard and it comes out black?

Answer:
If there is gray hair in it, then no. But if the hair is black and there is no gray in it, there is no objection. However, if there is gray hair, one should not change the gray to black; one should change it to red or yellow, or to a black mixed with red and black—meaning a mixture. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Change this gray hair, and avoid black.غيِّروا هذا الشيب، واجتنبوا السواد
, and the common practice is deception; because if he dyes it black, he deceives people by making them think he is young.
Q: Some people say: If he is young, is it permitted for him?
A:
Change this gray hair, and avoid black.غيِّروا هذا الشيب، واجتنبوا السواد
This is how the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded, and he said:
In the last of time, there will come people who dye themselves black like the crops of pigeons, and they will not smell the fragrance of Paradise.يأتي في آخر الزمان قومٌ يخضبون بالسَّواد كحواصل الحمام، لا يريحون رائحة الجنة
—we ask Allah for well-being.
Q: Perhaps he wants to get married, for example, and says: I am this age, so he deceives?
A: Some young people get gray hair early, so he must not dye it black. The hadith is general; the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Change this gray hair, and keep it away from black.غيِّروا هذا الشيب، وجنِّبوه السواد
absolutely, for the woman and the man.
