Ruling on newspaper and store contests

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the ruling on participating in the contests that newspapers and magazines offer to their readers? And is there anything wrong with their prizes?

Answer:
If it involves an exchange, it is gambling.
As for a contest that does not involve anything, such as a contest among readers: whoever memorizes three parts of the Qur'an gets such-and-such, whoever memorizes four parts gets such-and-such, and whoever memorizes such-and-such a hadith gets such-and-such. But if they hand over money that they do not get back except by paying money, then it is gambling.
Q: Some stores put out a box and say: Put your name in this box and you will get a prize. What is the ruling on this practice?
A: Do they put in money?
Q: No, for example, they say: You will get a computer?
A: And what is the reason?
Q: I don't know?
A: No, it must be with money. They do not put it out except with money, and they do not distribute it to people like that. So whatever involves money is gambling, even if it is just one riyal. For example: Put in one riyal and perhaps you will win such-and-such, or put in ten and perhaps you will win such-and-such. This is not permissible.
