What is the ruling on praise? And what is its implication for the one being praised?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is not the praise of people for a believer part of the immediate glad tidings of the believer?

Answer:
Yes, that is another matter. If he is praised for what he possesses, that is part of his immediate glad tidings. But if he is praised for something he does not possess, that deceives him.
Q: If a man is praised to his face?
A: If there is a need, then a little is fine; otherwise, praise is not recommended. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard a man praising someone, he said:
You have cut his back, woe to you! If any one of you wants to do so, let him say: I think he is such and such, and Allah is his accountant.قطعت ظهره، ويلك! إذا أراد أحدُكم فليقل: أحسبه كذا والله حسيبه
, and he said:
When you see those who shower (undue) praise (upon others), throw dust upon their faces.إذا رأيتم المدَّاحين فاحثُوا في وجوههم التُّراب
Sahih Muslim 3002b
.
Q: What should the one being praised say to the one praising him?
A: He should say: May Allah reward you with good, hold back, do not praise me, I know myself better. But a little is excused and there is nothing wrong with it, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said when he saw 'Umar: If you take a path, Satan takes a path other than yours.
Q: And if a person is able to forbid the praiser with his hand?
A: No, it does not require a hand, except throwing dust.
Q: Throw dust in his face?
A: If he fears no fitnah (trial, discord or temptation); otherwise, advice is sufficient, because some people cannot bear this.
