Is it permissible to praise the Messenger with more than the phrase "servant of Allah and His Messenger"?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : This is a grave error and clear misguidance. That is because the excessive praise prohibited in the hadith has two meanings. The first is praise in general, and the second is praise that exceeds the limit. Accordingly, the intended meaning of the hadith may be the prohibition of praising him (peace and blessings be upon him) in general, by way of blocking the means to harm, and by being content with Allah the Exalted having chosen him as a prophet and messenger, a beloved and a close friend, and with what He praised him with in His saying:
And indeed, you are of a great moral character وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَى خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ
. For what can humans say about him after Allah Blessed and Exalted has said this? And what is the value of any words they say in the face of this testimony of Allah the Exalted? And the greatest praise for him (peace and blessings be upon him) is to say about him what our Lord Mighty and Majestic said: that he is His servant and His messenger. That is the greatest commendation for him (peace and blessings be upon him), and it contains neither excess nor deficiency, neither exaggeration nor shortcoming. And our Lord Glorified and Exalted is He described him while he was at the highest of his ranks, and the highest of honor from Allah the Exalted for him, and that was when He took him in the night journey and ascended with him to the highest heavens, where He showed him of the great signs of his Lord. He described him at that time with servitude and said:
Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي أَسْرَى بِعَبْدِهِ لَيْلاً مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ الْأَقْصَى
[Al-Isra 17:1]

It is possible that the intended meaning is: Do not exaggerate in praising me, by describing me with more than what I deserve, and by attributing to me some of the attributes of Allah Blessed and Exalted. And perhaps the most likely meaning in the hadith is the first meaning, for two reasons. The first is the completion of the hadith, which is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
So, call me the Slave of Allah and His Apostle. فقولوا عبد الله ورسوله
Sahih al-Bukhari 3445
, meaning be content with what Allah Mighty and Majestic described me with, namely my being chosen as His servant and His messenger. The second is the heading that some of the imams of hadith established for it, so Imam al-Tirmidhi, for example, listed it under the title: "Chapter on the Humility of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)," so he understood the hadith as a prohibition of praise in general, which is consistent with the meaning of humility and harmonizes with it.

The Shaykh : May Allah forgive you. You turned all this speech into "it is not permissible." Here and there, and all this speech.

The questioner : Perhaps the most likely.

The Shaykh : The most likely, regarding the two interpretations, the interpretation of exaggeration and the interpretation of not exaggerating, this is the most likely.

The questioner : Okay, the absolute one, you did not say that.

The Shaykh : That is it, my brother, this is my speech.

The questioner : About the prohibition of praise.

The Shaykh : This is my speech. My speech is very clear that it is permissible to praise the Messenger with what is established from him, and it is not forbidden for us to add to the phrase "servant of Allah and His Messenger."

The questioner : We do not add to "servant of Allah and His messenger."

The Shaykh : It is not forbidden to add to "servant of Allah and His messenger," and it is permissible.

The questioner : Where? And it is not forbidden, and perhaps the most likely in the hadith is the first meaning.

The Shaykh : What is the first meaning?

The questioner : The two matters, that he is the servant of Allah and His messenger.

The Shaykh : What is the first meaning?

The questioner : So say "servant of Allah and His messenger."

The Shaykh : Easy, easy.

The questioner : The previous introduction.

The Shaykh : That is it.

The questioner : Meaning be content with what Allah Mighty and Majestic described me with, namely my being chosen as His servant and His messenger. Be content.

The Shaykh : You went back to that and that is all. That is it, my brother, I am writing the letter. May Allah reward you with good. You are long-winded beyond what is necessary. What is the reason that you leave the author's speech and go back to take the weak part? The most likely is that the Messenger is not to be praised except with what is reported from him, not that he is not to be praised except with the phrase "servant of Allah and His messenger." Why are you erasing all these phrases?

The questioner : Perhaps the most likely.

The Shaykh : Why are you erasing these phrases?

The questioner : But you relied on it. You did not rely on it, you relied on the second one.

The Shaykh : Who told you?

The questioner : Here.

The Shaykh : Whose speech is this?

The questioner : This is the first, you brought the sayings.

The Shaykh : These sayings, these are the sayings. This is my saying.

The questioner : Then what does "the most likely in the hadith" mean? The most likely?

The Shaykh : There is no "most likely" here, O Shaykh. May Allah guide you.

The questioner : Here it is written "perhaps the most likely."

The Shaykh : The most likely between the two sayings, what are the two sayings? Either exaggeration or not exaggerating. Not exaggerating is the most likely. This praise that we mentioned here falls under not exaggerating, or not? I am asking you?

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : I am asking you, does this fall under not exaggerating or not?

The questioner : It falls under it.

The Shaykh : Okay, this does not contradict this.

The questioner : But here, when you mentioned, no problem, be the most likely.

The Shaykh : My brother, you are the author, complete the book.

The questioner : But I want to understand the phrase, meaning.

The Shaykh : You are not satisfied, my brother. I am telling you, this phrase is clear. The hadith is interpreted with two meanings: meaning do not praise me except with what is true, and do not exaggerate.

The questioner : And the second?

The Shaykh : The second, exaggerate.

The questioner : Say "servant of Allah and His messenger."

The Shaykh : No.

The questioner : But "servant of Allah and His messenger" does not have ... .

The Shaykh : My brother, do you want to decide what you have, or do you want to understand from me? Understand what I am saying. Do not praise me, two meanings: do not praise me in general except with what is reported in the Book and the Sunnah, what is reported in the Book and the Sunnah
And indeed, you are upon a great character وإنك لعلى خلق عظيم
and "servant of Allah and His messenger" and so on. All of this is reported in the Sunnah, so it falls under the saying "do not praise me in general." The second saying, do not exaggerate in praising me, this is the weaker position for us. So say "servant of Allah and His messenger" and say
And indeed, you are upon a great character وإنك لعلى خلق عظيم
and "master of the children of Adam." This is not praise in the sense of exaggeration, but in the sense of praising him (peace be upon him) with what is his reality.

The questioner : What is established in the Sunnah, meaning.

The Shaykh : Okay, what remains? You hold onto the weak part of the speech and leave the speech from the beginning.

The questioner : I mean to understand.

The Shaykh : Okay, I am explaining to you. You will still go back and say "here, okay, go back from before."

The questioner : Okay, your citation of al-Tirmidhi when al-Tirmidhi said.

The Shaykh : This is support for our interpretation that it does not mean exaggeration, but that it means do not praise me except with what I described with.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : Good, if Allah wills. You will say here, my brother, here, it does not contradict. You will not say all of it. I take some of it on the neck of some. So we say the most likely is not exaggerating, and falling under not exaggerating is describing the Messenger with what he was described with in the Book and the Sunnah. This falls under not exaggerating. And of that is "servant of Allah and His messenger." Meaning, when the Messenger said "so say"
the servant of Allah and His Messenger. عبد الله ورسوله
, it means do not exaggerate in praising me and say words like this. But if it is established that he said
I am the leader of the sons of Adam, and it is no boast أنا سيد ولد آدم ولا فخر
Sunan Ibn Majah 4308Sahih (Darussalam)
, this is not exaggeration. This was mentioned explicitly before, my brother. It is not permissible.

The questioner : But the word "most likely" is what I...

The Shaykh : He is still saying "most likely," my brother. The most likely, yes. But the most likely of two opinions, what are the two opinions? Exaggeration and not exaggerating. The most likely is not exaggerating. Okay, the most likely is not exaggerating, but does not exaggerating negate or contradict praising the Messenger with what is established from him?

The questioner : It does not contradict.

The Shaykh : This is the meaning of our speech, it is clear.

The questioner : If Allah wills, I understood incorrectly.
