Explanation of the words of Ibn Malik (may Allah have mercy on him): . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . and the disagreement in *** waw and ya, with them, an opening, follow.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : He said: "
"And the disagreement in *** waw and ya, with them, an opening, follow"

The disagreement in waw and ya; are waw and ya among the letters of softness or not?
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : They are among the letters of softness, without doubt, because the letters of softness are gathered in your saying "waw, ya, waw, ya"; these are the letters of softness, yes, waw, alif, and ya. If the waw is preceded by an open vowel, and the ya is preceded by an open vowel, the author says:
"And the disagreement in *** waw and ya, with them, an opening, follow"
"Fath" is the subject, and "qafi" is the predicate of the subject, and "bi-hima" is a preposition and its object, attached to "qafi," meaning: and the disagreement in waw and ya is an opening, following with them. What is the meaning of "qafi bi-hima"?
The student: Following.

The Shaykh : Following, so the meaning is: if a waw and a ya are found, what is the appropriate movement for the waw?
The student: The dammah.

The Shaykh : The dammah, like "Mansur," and what is the appropriate movement for the ya?
The student : The kasrah.

The Shaykh : The kasrah, like? "Miskin." If a movement is found that does not suit them, an opening, an open vowel, Ibn Malik says that there is disagreement in it. Some said that the waw is also deleted; the waw is deleted and the ya is deleted. And some said: they are not deleted; they are not deleted but remain. An example of that in the waw is: "Fir'awn," "Fir'awn." The waw is among the letters of softness, and what precedes it is a movement that is not appropriate. What is before it?
The student: A fathah.

The Shaykh : A fathah, and what is the example in the ya?
The student: "Quraish."

The Shaykh : "Quraish," yes, "Quraish." The ya is the third letter and also superfluous, but what precedes it, what precedes it, is it open or with a kasrah?
The student: Open.

The Shaykh : Open, with a movement that is not appropriate. So you say: "Ya Fir'aw," this is one saying, and you say: "Ya Fir'" this is a second saying.
