Slaughter of Cattle for the Purpose of Seeking Rain
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Some people in our region, before the call to Islam was re-established after the rule of the House of Saud, would take cattle and walk them around the mountains and valleys, and then slaughter one of them, intending thereby to seek rain. Is this permissible or not?
A: This practice has no basis in the pure Shari'ah, and it is a blameworthy religious innovation; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did not do this. Rather, the Sunnah in times of drought is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did of seeking aid in the Friday sermon or other sermons, such as the Eid sermon, or going out to the desert, or performing the prayer for rain, or asking Allah and supplicating to Him for relief, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did. It is obligatory for Muslims to repent to Allah, the Exalted, from all sins; because sins are the cause of all evil in this world and the Hereafter, and repentance to Allah, the Exalted, and standing firm on the truth are the cause of all good in this world and the Hereafter.
It is prescribed for Muslims to support the poor and give them charity, because Allah averts calamity through charity, and because it is mercy and excellence, and Allah shows mercy to the merciful among His servants. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1924Hasan (Darussalam) And Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said: : [Al-A'raf: 56], and He the Exalted said: [An-Nur: 31], and there are many verses in this meaning.

The merciful are shown mercy by Ar-Rahman. Be merciful on the earth, and you will be shown mercy from Who is above the heavens.
الراحمون يرحمهم الرحمن، ارحموا من في الأرض يرحمكم من في السماءAnd cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. And invoke Him in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good.
And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.
وَتُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا أَيُّهَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
