Ruling on Letting the Beard Grow
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Praise be to Allah alone, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions. As for what follows:
Some of my brothers asked me the following questions:
1- Is growing the beard obligatory or permissible?
2- Is shaving it a sin or a neglect of the religion?
3- Is shaving it permissible while growing the mustache?
The answer to these questions is: We say: It is authentically established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) what al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated in the two Sahihs from the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: And in Sahih Muslim, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) , it is said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 260 And al-Nasa'i narrated in his Sunan with a sound chain from Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) , who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2761Sahih (Darussalam) The great scholar and famous hafiz Abu Muhammad Ibn Hazm said: End of quote.
The hadiths in this chapter and the words of the scholars—regarding shaving the mustache, growing the beard, honoring it, and letting it hang down—are numerous, and it is not possible to exhaustively detail many of them in this treatise. From the aforementioned hadiths and what Ibn Hazm cited regarding consensus, the answer to the three questions is known. The summary is: growing the beard, maintaining it, and letting it hang down is obligatory, and it is not permissible to leave it; because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded it, and his command is obligatory, as Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said: [Surah al-Hashr: 7].
Likewise, cutting the mustache is obligatory, and shaving it is better. As for maintaining it or growing a mustache, that is not permissible; because it contradicts the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):, , Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2761Sahih (Darussalam) These four phrases all came in the authentic hadiths from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). In the last phrase, which is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2761Sahih (Darussalam), there is a severe warning and a firm caution. This obliges the Muslim to be cautious of what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden, and to hasten to obey what Allah and His Messenger have commanded.
From this, it is also known that maintaining the mustache and growing a mustache is a sin among sins and a disobedience among disobediences. Likewise, shaving the beard and shortening it are among the sins and disobediences that diminish faith and weaken it, and there is fear of the descent of the anger and retribution of Allah.
In the hadiths mentioned earlier, there is an indication that growing the mustache, shaving the beard, and shortening it are imitating the Zoroastrians and the polytheists. It is known that imitating them is a wrong that is not permissible to do; because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Abi Dawud 4031Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani) I hope that this answer is sufficient and convincing.
And Allah is the guarantor of success, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
