Is the beard obligatory or permissible?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Praise be to Allah alone, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions.
As for what follows:
Some of my brothers asked me the following questions:
1- Is growing the beard obligatory or permissible?
2- Is shaving it a sin or a neglect of the religion?
3- Is shaving it permissible while growing the mustache?
The answer to these questions is:
We say: It is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) what al-Bukhari and Muslim reported in the two Sahihs, from the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Shave the mustaches and let the beards grow; differ from the polytheists.أحفوا الشوارب، ووفروا اللحى؛ خالفوا المشركين
And in Sahih Muslim, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Trim closely the moustache, and grow beard, and thus act against the fire-worshippers.جزوا الشوارب، وأرخوا اللحى، خالفوا المجوس
Sahih Muslim 260
And al-Nasa'i reported in his Sunan with a sound chain, from Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever does not take from his mustache, then he is not from us.من لم يأخذ من شاربه فليس منا
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2761Sahih (Darussalam)
The great scholar and famous hafiz Abu Muhammad Ibn Hazm said: "The scholars agreed that trimming the mustache and letting the beard grow is an obligation." End of quote.
The hadiths in this chapter and the words of the scholars—regarding shaving the mustaches, growing the beards, honoring them, and letting them hang down—are numerous, and it is not possible to exhaustively detail many of them in this short discourse.
From the aforementioned hadiths and what Ibn Hazm transmitted regarding the consensus, the answer to the three questions is known.
And its summary is: That growing the beard, letting it grow, and letting it hang down is an obligation that is not permissible to leave; because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded it, and his command is for obligation, as Allah Mighty and Majestic said:
And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain fromوَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانْتَهُوا
[Al-Hashr: 7].
Likewise, trimming the mustache is obligatory, and shaving it is better, but letting it grow or growing mustaches is not permissible; because it contradicts the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Trim the mustaches.قصوا الشوارب
and:
Shave the beardsأحفوا الشوارب
and:
Trim the mustaches.جزوا الشوارب
and:
Whoever does not take from his mustache, then he is not from us.من لم يأخذ من شاربه فليس منا
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2761Sahih (Darussalam)
.
These four phrases all came in the authentic hadiths from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and in the last phrase, which is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever does not take from his mustache, then he is not from us.من لم يأخذ من شاربه فليس منا
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2761Sahih (Darussalam)
, there is a severe warning and a firm caution, and this obliges the Muslim to be cautious of what Allah and His Messenger forbade, and to hasten to obey what Allah and His Messenger commanded.
From this it is also known that letting the mustache grow and growing mustaches is a sin among the sins, and a disobedience among the disobediences, and likewise shaving the beard and shortening it is among the sins and disobediences that diminish faith and weaken it, and it is feared that the anger and retribution of Allah will befall one because of it.
In the hadiths mentioned above, there is an indication that growing the mustaches and shaving the beards and shortening them is imitating the Zoroastrians and the polytheists, and it is known that imitating them is a wrong that is not permissible to do; because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who copies any people is one of them.من تشبه بقوم فهو منهم
Sunan Abi Dawud 4031Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
, and I hope that this answer is sufficient and convincing.
And Allah is the guarantor of success. And may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and his family and his Companions.
