Excessive spending is not permissible in wedding feasts, in marriage, or otherwise

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: What is your opinion regarding the severe extravagance we see in the food served at celebrations, which ends up in garbage bags? Is there a solution? And where should the food leftovers be placed?

A: The answer to this matter has been given previously: it is not permissible, because extravagance is not permissible, neither in wedding feasts nor in anything else. The host of the feast should seek out what is necessary and nothing more, while he should leave out things that are not needed. The remainder should be handed over to organizations that accept it, such as charitable associations, or to some of the poor, or to workers, by transporting it to them. It is obligatory to transport it to those who will benefit from it, and not to throw it in the garbage, or with the trash, or near impurities. Rather, it should be transported to those in need. If there are no people in need, it should be moved to a clean place, not on the roads or with filth, so that perhaps some person or animal may come and eat it, and so that it is not desecrated. This is in case of necessity. However, if there are workers or poor people who can eat it, it is obligatory to deliver it to them, or to dry it out so that it can be transported to those who need it, even as fodder for animals. If economy is practiced and no extra effort is made, the amount of leftover food will decrease.
