Not Exaggerating in Wedding Expenses.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And it is important regarding marriage that a person knows that marriage is a common blessing, not one of the rare blessings. It is a common blessing; every young man will get married. It is not one of the rare matters that is celebrated with that extreme celebration that goes beyond moderation. We find some people... we find some people exaggerating to an extreme degree on the night of the party, to the point that some of them rent hotels for up to forty thousand. Why? What made this obligatory? Also, it was said to me that some people distribute invitation cards, and the cost of a single card is fifty riyals. Glory be to Allah, who made this obligatory? Is marriage one of the rare matters that does not happen except after tearing one's soul apart, such that a person reaches the point of losing this loss due to the joy? Absolutely not. Marriage is a customary matter and a common blessing, and it should not be taken out of its proper course, neither in the feasts, nor in the invitation cards, nor in the number of invitees. Some people distribute cards that reach five hundred cards to people who may not come except out of politeness. If the man were asked, "Do you prefer to come or not to come?" he would say, "I do not prefer to come; I would prefer to rest, but I will come to him out of politeness." So we say, why is this excess and this exaggeration? Look at those who have a right over you from among your relatives, and those who have a right over you from among your friends. Look at those who, if you do not invite them, will hold it against you in their hearts. As for anyone other than this, there is no need for them. There is no need for them.
