The Ruling on Seeking the Assistance of Non-Muslims in Fighting the Tyrant of Iraq
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Some people who doubt the fatwa of the Council of Senior Scholars regarding seeking the assistance of non-Muslims in defending the lands of the Muslims and fighting the ruler of Iraq say that there is no strong evidence supporting it. What is your Eminence’s comment on that?
A: We have clarified this previously and in many articles, and we have explained that Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, made it clear in His great Book that He, Exalted is He, has permitted His believing servants to do what is forbidden to them if they are compelled to do so, as He, the Exalted, said: [Al-An'am: 119]. And when He forbade carrion, blood, the flesh of the pig, the strangled, the beaten to death, and others, He said at the end of the verse: [Al-Ma'idah: 3].
The point is that the state in this situation was compelled to seek the assistance of some disbelieving states against this oppressive tyrant; because his danger is great, and because he has other supporters who, if he were to win, would appear and their evil would become great. Therefore, the Saudi government and the rest of the Gulf states saw that it is necessary for strong states to face this atheistic, oppressive enemy, and to assist in repelling him, curbing his evil, and removing his oppression.
The Council of Senior Scholars in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, when they considered this and looked into it and knew the situation, clarified that this is a permissible matter, and that it is obligatory to use what repels harm, and it is not permissible to delay in that. Rather, it is obligatory to immediately use what repels harm from the Muslims, even by seeking the assistance of a group of polytheists in what concerns repelling aggression and removing oppression. They came for that, and they did not come to make the lands lawful for themselves, nor to take them, but they came to repel aggression and remove oppression, and then they will return to their lands. They are now targeting the locations where the enemy seeks assistance, and they do not intentionally kill the innocent or the civilians, but rather they want to kill the oppressive aggressors, ruin their plan, and destroy their means of supply and their strength in the war. But some of the alarmists with malicious intent lie to the people and say: They have besieged the two Holy Mosques, and they did this, and they left that. All of this is from promoting falsehood and causing confusion among the people out of hatred in the hearts of some people, or out of ignorance from some of them and lack of insight, or because he is hired by the ruler of Iraq to confuse the people.
People are of different categories: some are ignorant of the facts and things are confused for them, some are ignorant and do not know the Islamic legal rulings, and some are hired by the oppressive tyrants to confuse the people and obscure the truth for them. And Allah is the One to be sought for help.
