The Ruling on the Udhiyah Sacrifice and Its Method

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The second question in the listener’s letter: Abdul Rahman Mawla Bukhs from Pakistan says: I often hear about the udhiyah sacrifice. What is the ruling on the udhiyah, and what is the method of the udhiyah from camels? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: The udhiyah is a recommended practice (sunnah). The Chosen One (peace and blessings be upon him) performed it. He used to sacrifice two white rams every year. He would slaughter one on behalf of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and he would slaughter the second on behalf of those from his Ummah who declared the oneness of Allah (tawhid), (peace and blessings be upon him).
This was his custom every year: to sacrifice with two animals, two white rams from the sheep. So it is a confirmed recommended practice (sunnah muakkadah) with the ability to afford it. A person sacrifices one animal on behalf of himself and his household, on behalf of himself and his wife, his parents, and the like, meaning: on behalf of himself and his household, even if they are many. It is not obligatory, but rather it is a confirmed recommended practice (sunnah muakkadah) with the ability to afford it. One animal is sufficient for him and his household. If he sacrifices more, there is no harm. If he is unable to afford it, he owes nothing. It is only a confirmed recommended practice (sunnah muakkadah) with the capacity to do so. Yes.
The presenter: And he asks: What is the method of the udhiyah from camels?
The Shaykh: And camels are also sacrificed on behalf of seven people, and the cow is the same. If one slaughters a she-camel or a male camel on behalf of seven Muslims, or a cow on behalf of seven Muslims, there is no harm. The Muslims used to sacrifice with a large camel (badanah) and a cow on behalf of seven people, and likewise with the sacrificial animal (hady) in Hajj. A large camel is slaughtered on behalf of seven in the hady, and a cow is likewise on behalf of seven. They gather for this and slaughter it on behalf of themselves in Hajj as hady, or as udhiyah in their lands. They eat from it and feed others. They eat from it and feed their friends, relatives, and the poor. This is the recommended practice (sunnah). The believer eats from his hady and his udhiyah, and he feeds and gives to his friends, relatives, and neighbors. This is the recommended practice (sunnah). Yes.
