How to Teach the Deaf-Mute the Rulings of Islam
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
We move on to a message received by the program from one of the brothers. He says: Salah Abdul-Rahim Ahmad, a Sudanese. Our brother says: If I have a brother who is deaf and mute, and as is known, he neither hears nor speaks, and naturally he knows nothing about prayer, fasting, or zakah, and knows nothing about the rulings of Islam, and knows nothing of the Qur'an, how should guidance be provided in this situation?
Answer: This is necessary, meaning: one must do with him what teaches his mind through sign language, if he can see... the people at the time of prayer, so that he can observe their actions. And one should write for him, if he can write, teaching him writing so that he may benefit from it and thus his mind grasps or understands. If he grasps and understands through writing and sign language, he is obligated according to what has reached his knowledge. If he does not speak or hear, he may understand through sign language or writing, if writing is feasible, so that he acts upon what Allah has made obligatory and leaves off what Allah has forbidden, through the means of writing or through the means of sign language. This is if he has reason. As for if he does not have reason, and it becomes apparent from his condition that he has no reason, there is no blame on him; because he is not obligated., so if he is a person of unsound mind with no reason, he owes nothing. Yes.
The presenter: So is imitation sufficient for someone like this? They teach him by imitation, and that is sufficient?
The Shaykh: They teach him as much as possible, through writing, through sign language, through whatever they are able to do. This type of person may be compensated with great understanding through signs. If the sense of hearing and the sense of speech are lost, it may be compensated, by the permission of Allah. This is an observed and known phenomenon among those who are afflicted with this; they have a great understanding of signs. And we know people from this group who work and toil and earn money through sign language, and they pray with people and fast with people, and they were among the best of people, all through sign language or through writing. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
