Ruling on severing family ties for a valid excuse

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is a message from the sender (M. S. 'A.), an Egyptian working in the Kingdom. She says in her message: I am married to a man who knows Allah and fears Him and maintains his family ties, except that he does not visit his aunt. The reason for this is his fear of problems, because she does not leave anyone alone and tries to stir up problems between me and my husband's family. In many cases, people cannot escape her. So my husband never visits her out of fear of that. I tell him that it is obligatory for you to visit her and maintain your family ties, even if there are problems in doing so. Please inform us of the ruling?
Answer: The husband should look into the matter. If his aunt harms him and his family, and if he visits her, he suffers harm from it, then there is no blame on him; because she is the one who severs ties and the one who causes harm, so there is no blame on him. However, if he is able to maintain ties with her through money if she is poor, or through greeting her by phone, or by writing letters, or by visiting her to greet her but not having her come to his house, saying: Do not come to us, for I fear that your coming will be harmful to us, or I will maintain ties with you myself, then there is no blame on him. He maintains ties with her himself and treats her well, and this is obligatory; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Anyone who cuts off relationship from his nearest relatives will not enter Paradise.لا يدخل الجنة قاطع رحم
Sunan Abi Dawud 1696Sahih (Al-Albani)
, and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Al-Wasil is not the one who recompenses the good done to him by his relatives, but Al-Wasil is the one who keeps good relations with those relatives who had severed the bond of kinship with him.ليس الواصل بالمكافي، ولكن الواصل الذي إذا قطعت رحمه وصلها
Sahih al-Bukhari 5991
.
So it is obligatory for him to maintain ties with her through money, kind words, visiting, writing letters, or by phone, and this is sufficient. And if he prevents her from his house because she is a source of harm through bad speech, or cursing, or backbiting, or talebearing, then he is excused if he prevents her from his house. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
