The Ruling on Obedience to Parents in Removing the Hijab
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Regarding the hijab and niqab, a sister of ours from Iraq is suffering greatly, according to my understanding of her message. She says that her family opposes her wearing the hijab, and she asks, if you would be so kind—Shaykh Abdul Aziz—how should she act?
Answer: It is obligatory for her to obey Allah and His Messenger, and it is not permissible for her to obey her family in what Allah has forbidden; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Abi Dawud 2625Sahih (Al-Albani), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Mishkat al-Masabih 3696, and Allah says, Exalted is He, in His great Book regarding women: [Al-Ahzab: 53]. So the hijab is purification for the hearts of all, for males and females, and it is one of the causes of safety from fitnah (trial, discord or temptation). And He, Glorious and Majestic, says: [Al-Ahzab: 59]. The jilbab is what is worn over the ordinary clothes and covers the face and head. And He (peace and blessings be upon him) says: [An-Nur: 31], the verse.
The face and hair are from the adornment, indeed they are the greatest of the adornment, and so is the chest, and so is the hand and the foot, and the like of that.
So the believing woman covers herself from foreign men, even if her family says to her: "Reveal yourself," and even if her husband says to her: "Reveal yourself," she does not reveal herself to his brothers or his relatives, even if her father said that, or her uncle, or her husband, or her grandfather, or anyone else. Obedience to Allah takes precedence. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said, in what is established in the two Sahihs from her (may Allah be pleased with her), she said regarding the expedition of the slander: "When I was delayed in relieving myself and the people departed, and I came to their place but did not find them, I lay down waiting. Then I heard the voice of Safwan ibn al-Mu'attal; when he saw the blackness, he said: 'To Allah we belong and to Him we return.' I heard the voice. She said: 'When I heard his voice, I covered my face. And he had seen me before the hijab, so he recognized me.' Her saying: 'So I covered my face, and he had seen me before the hijab' makes clear that the hijab which Allah prescribed for them and by which the Qur'an was revealed includes covering the face; and because the face is the gathering place of adornment, by which a woman is known for her beauty or ugliness. She is not known by her hand or her foot. Her goodness and beauty, or the opposite, is known by the face, and the rest follows it. Yes.

Obedience is in matters which are good and universally recognized.
إنما الطاعة في المعروفA creature is not to be obeyed when it involves disobedience to the "Creator.”
لا طاعة لمخلوق في معصية الخالقAnd when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts.
O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُلْ لِأَزْوَاجِكَ وَبَنَاتِكَ وَنِسَاءِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِنْ جَلابِيبِهِنَّ ذَلِكَ أَدْنَى أَنْ يُعْرَفْنَ فَلا يُؤْذَيْنَand not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers
The face and hair are from the adornment, indeed they are the greatest of the adornment, and so is the chest, and so is the hand and the foot, and the like of that.
