The Ruling on Killing Insects and Others
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is a letter from the sender, Saleh Abu Marwan, from Al-Mukalla in Hadramawt. He says in his letter: Is it permissible to kill the creatures of the earth and their insects, such as ants and the like, or is there a type of insect whose killing is permissible while others are not?
Answer: The thing that causes harm is killed. If ants or other insects cause harm, they are killed. Likewise, the scorpion and the snake are killed, as are the mouse and the crow. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded their killing in both the permitted areas and the Sacred Precinct: the crow, the kite, the scorpion, the snake, and the vicious dog. Likewise, whatever causes harm among the flying insects, such as mosquitoes, flies, and ants, is killed if it causes harm, and left alone if it does not cause harm. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you, meaning the rule.
The Shaykh: ...... harm.
The presenter: ...... harm is killed?
The Shaykh: Likewise, whatever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted to be killed is killed.
The presenter: Of the five ......?
The Shaykh: The five...... and the sixth is the snake: the crow, the kite, the scorpion, the mouse, the vicious dog, and the snake. Likewise, the ordinary predator, and likewise harmful insects such as mosquitoes and their like. Yes.
The presenter: The snake, isn't it feared that the jinn might take its form, so one should be cautious about killing it?
The Shaykh: No, this applies to houses in inhabited areas. One should seek permission three times and warn it; if it returns, it is killed.
The presenter: Only the snake?
The Shaykh: Yes, only the snake, according to some scholars; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded seeking its permission three times in inhabited areas. As for in the roads and in the desert, one does not seek permission; it is killed.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
