Ruling on applying nail polish to a woman’s hands and removing it when washing her body
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first message in this episode came from the questioner Latifah 'Abd Allah al-Zahrani from al-Ta'if. She says in her message: Some women use cosmetic tools, including nail polish that is applied to the fingers of the hand. What is the ruling if a woman dies while it is on her hands? And what is obligatory for her relatives to do? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows:
This nail polish must be removed at the time of ablution and at the time of the full ritual bath. Likewise, if she dies while it is on her fingers, it is removed when washing her body; because, as far as we know about it, it prevents water from reaching the nails. It has a body and thickness; it is removed and scraped off, and there is no harm in that. And if she leaves it off entirely, that is better. Henna is sufficient; henna for changing the color of the fingers is sufficient. There is no need for the nail polish that people have started using recently. Leaving it off is more appropriate and better; because a woman may forget it at the time of ablution and may not scrape it off, and this would be a harm to her regarding her ablution.
So it is obligatory that it be removed at the time of ablution, so that water reaches the nails themselves. Yes.
The presenter: And regarding the case of death?
The Shaykh: Likewise, at the time of washing, it is removed, at the time of washing the deceased. Yes.
The presenter: Is it necessary to remove it?
The Shaykh: Yes.
The presenter: If it is left, I mean: do they sin by doing so?
The Shaykh: The matter is lenient in this, if Allah wills, but removing it is more appropriate and safer.
The presenter: May Allah reward you and reward you with good.
