Washing a son for his mother after her death

Fatwa number ( 2879 )
Q: A man’s mother reached the age of old, approximately 80 years old, and she was afflicted with an internal illness until she had been ill for two years, then she passed away. He washed her, and his intention in washing her was to do a good deed for himself, and there was no need for someone else to do it. What is obligatory for me in this matter? May Allah reward you with good.
A: The practice that was established in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Rightly Guided Caliphs (may Allah be pleased with them) is that when a woman dies, women wash her, not men, except for a wife; her husband may wash her, and he may also leave the washing to the women. Likewise, a slave woman is washed by her master as long as she is lawful for him. When a man dies, men wash him, not women, except for a husband; his wife may wash him, and she may also leave that to the men. Accordingly, your washing of your mother is contrary to the Shari'ah, based on what is known about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), even if she was advanced in age. You must seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him, and do not do such a thing again with any of your mahrams, even with good intention and the aim of doing a good deed. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
