The ruling on one who returns to sins after repenting from them
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is a letter received by the program from a person who does not wish to have his name mentioned, from the middle school in Hajr. He says in his letter: If a person commits what Allah has forbidden, such as unlawful sexual intercourse, theft, and the like, and then repents, then returns to it and repents, up to three times, will his repentance be accepted as a sincere repentance, given that he is unable to pay back what he stole because he has no money, and he fears that if he seeks purification regarding the unlawful sexual intercourse, his matter will be exposed and the hadd punishment will be carried out against him? What should he do?
Answer: Repentance is by which Allah erases the sin. Allah the Exalted said: [Surat al-Nur: 31]. Thus, He made repentance a cause for success. So, whoever repents with a sincere repentance has succeeded, and Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, erases sins by it. If one commits unlawful sexual intercourse, steals, drinks intoxicants, or does something similar, and then repents to Allah with a sincere repentance, ceasing from the sin, feeling remorse for what has passed, and resolving with a true resolve not to return to it, then Allah erases the sin from him. If he returns to it, another repentance is obligatory upon him, and so on if he returns a third time; another repentance is obligatory upon him, and so on. Repentance covers what came before it. If he repents with a sincere repentance, he is cleared of the previous sin and held accountable for the new sin. If he repents from it, Allah erases it from him. If he commits it a third time, he is held accountable for it, but not for the past, because repentance erased it, provided he is sincere in his repentance. However, if he is not sincere, but rather has in his heart a determination to persist in the sin whenever he is able to do so, then this repentance is not valid, because the condition of repentance is to resolve not to return to it. If he has in his heart and intention that he will return to it, then his first and second repentances are not valid. He will be held accountable for the first, and for the second, and for what follows, until he repents with a sincere repentance that includes three matters:
The first requirement: ceasing the sin and abandoning it out of reverence for Allah and fear of Him.
The second matter: Remorse for the past sins.
The third requirement: a sincere resolve not to return to it. If one is unable to repay the money, Allah will bear it on his behalf on the Day of Resurrection. If he stole and then repented, but has nothing with which to return the money, then Allah will bear it on his behalf if his repentance is valid. The Exalted said: [20:82]. It is prescribed for him to make supplication. For those who have stolen, it is prescribed to supplicate for them for replacement, pardon, and forgiveness. He asks his Lord for pardon and forgiveness. When he is able to do so, he gives them the money in a manner that allows him to deliver it to them without them knowing that he had stolen it. Yes.

Answer: Repentance is by which Allah erases the sin. Allah the Exalted said:
And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.
وَتُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا أَيُّهَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَThe first requirement: ceasing the sin and abandoning it out of reverence for Allah and fear of Him.
The Exalted said:
But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.
وَإِنِّي لَغَفَّارٌ لِمَنْ تَابَ وَآمَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا ثُمَّ اهْتَدَىThe presenter: May Allah reward you.
