The ruling on one who swears not to commit a sin and then commits it
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
What if a person did something forbidden and became accustomed to it, then swore not to do it but did it again? What is required of him? How do you advise him? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer: He must repent to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), for the cure for sins is repentance. He (Exalted and Majestic is He) says: [Surat al-Nur: 31], and He (Glorified and Exalted is He) says: [Surat al-Tahrim: 8]. It is obligatory for every Muslim who commits a sin to hasten to repent to Allah (Mighty and Majestic). This is done by feeling regret for the past evils, by abandoning them and guarding against them, and by making a sincere resolve not to return to them out of fear of Allah, reverence for Him, and sincerity to Him (Glorified and Exalted is He). This is what is obligatory for every sinner, whether male or female. He must also pay the expiation for the oath; if he swore not to return to it and then did return, he owes the expiation for the oath along with repentance. The expiation is feeding ten poor people, giving each poor person half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of the staple food of the country, such as dates or otherwise, which is approximately one and a half kilograms. Or clothing them, giving each one what suffices for prayer, such as a shirt, a lower garment, and a cloak. Or freeing a slave. Whoever cannot do all of this must fast for three days. Repentance is necessary for all sins.
