The ruling on performing wudu with water in which an animal has drunk
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The question: Also, I noticed that there is a collection of questions on the other side of the letter, including a question about water from which an animal has drunk: is it permissible to perform wudu with it?
The answer: This varies. If the animal is one whose meat is eaten, such as camels, cattle, sheep, and permissible game, there is no harm; it may be used and drunk from without any blame. However, if the water is from which an impure animal, such as a dog, has drunk, it must be poured out if the amount is small. If the amount is large, it is not harmful. Likewise, if the animal is pure according to the Shari'ah ruling, such as a cat, a donkey, or a mule, the correct view is that they are pure in life. This is because they are among the animals that roam around us: donkeys, mules, and cats. Therefore, the correct view is that their saliva and what they drink from have the ruling of purity. Donkeys and mules were used during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Companions did not avoid their traces; rather, they used them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would ride a donkey while naked, and it is known that it would sweat. If it were impure, he would not have done that. This indicates that its sweat, saliva, and what comes from its mouth are not impure. The same applies to the cat. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding it:Sunan Abi Dawud 75Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani) As for predators, such as lions, tigers, and wolves, if the water is small, it is poured out like in the case of a dog. If it is large, such as in ponds or places with large amounts of water, drinking from it is not harmful. In fact, we use it; we return to these waters and use them, and it does not harm them. As for the small amount in small vessels, if an animal drinks from it, it is poured out, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding the vessel from which a dog had drunk: This is the view of the scholars regarding small vessels that are affected by a dog drinking from them or similar. As for large vessels with a lot of water, ponds, and pools, dogs do not harm them, nor does anything other than dogs. They are used, and praise be to Allah.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. Regarding washing seven times when a dog has drunk from it, what is your opinion, O Shaykh?
The Shaykh: This is as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: it is washed seven times if a dog has drunk from a vessel. It is washed seven times with earth, one of which is with earth. One is with earth, and it is the first one... meaning: the first of them is with earth. However, if a dog has drunk from a large amount of water and large vessels, they are pure and are not affected by it.
The presenter: And this is not required...?
The Shaykh: And this is not required, yes. This is only for the usual small vessels. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
