Question:
From al-Zulfi, the listener Abdullah al-Shamri sent a question saying: I read a hadith that was said to be qudsi from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), in which Allah the Exalted says:
I, the jinn, and the humans are in a great matter; I create, and others are worshipped besides Me; I provide sustenance, and others are given thanks besides Me.
If this hadith is authentic, please explain it to us.
May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
This hadith is not authentic; rather, it is from the reports of the Children of Israel about which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
relate traditions from the children of Isra'il; there is no harm.
Sunan Abi Dawud 3662Sahih (Al-Albani)
However, its meaning is correct, for most of creation disbelieved in the blessings of Allah and did not worship Him alone; rather, they worshipped the devils, they worshipped their desires, they worshipped idols and graves, and so on. So the meaning is correct. It is said in this qudsi report that He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said: “I, the jinn, and the humans are in a great matter.” It is a true report, a great matter, a great news: “I create, and others are worshipped besides Me.” He (Exalted and Majestic is He) is the Creator of all creation. Allah is the Creator of everything, and He (Glorified and Exalted is He) alone is the Creator, the All-Knowing. And He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said:
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.
[Al-Dhariyat: 56]
And I provide sustenance, and others are given thanks besides Me.
This means: he usually gives thanks to other than Allah; he gives thanks to Zayd and 'Amr, and forgets Allah. This is the state of most people.
And the completion of the report is:
My good descends to them, and their evil ascends to Me; I seek their affection through blessings, and they become averse to Me through sins.
And this is the reality for most of creation. So it is obligatory for the one who is accountable, it is obligatory for him to worship Allah alone and to give Him thanks for His blessings by obeying Him, giving Him thanks, and praising Him (Glorified and Exalted is He).
And the greatest of giving thanks is obeying the commands and leaving the prohibitions, along with praising Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He). And He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said: :
So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Meفَاذْكُرُونِي أَذْكُرْكُمْ وَاشْكُرُوا لِي
[Al-Baqarah: 152] And He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said:
If you are grateful, I will surely increase youلَئِنْ شَكَرْتُمْ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ
[Ibrahim: 7].
So it is obligatory for all of Allah’s servants, from the jinn and the humans, from the men and the women, to worship Allah alone, with their supplication, their fear, their hope, their prayers, their fasting, and all other acts of worship, all for Allah alone. And they should give Him thanks for His bestowals, such as health, wealth, a spouse, offspring, and so on. And likewise, the woman gives thanks to Allah for her husband, for her offspring, for her health, and for the sustenance He has given her. Thus, upon all the jinn and the humans, upon them is giving thanks to Allah, obeying Allah, and worshipping Him. He created them for this matter. Allah did not create them in vain or in futility; He created them to worship Him, and He commanded them with this. He the Exalted said:
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.
[Al-Dhariyat: 56] And He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said:
O mankind, worship your Lord
[Al-Baqarah: 21] And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: :
And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Himوَقَضَى رَبُّكَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا إِيَّاهُ
[Al-Isra: 23] This means: He commanded.
So it is obligatory for everyone to worship Allah alone with prayer, fasting, supplication, and seeking aid from Him (Glorified and Exalted is He), and swearing by Him (Exalted and Majestic is He), and all other acts of worship, all for Allah alone. As He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said:
And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth
[Al-Bayyinah: 5] So upon the servant, whether male or female, upon all the servants, men and women, Arabs and non-Arabs, jinn and humans, kings and others, upon them all is to worship Allah, and to fear Him and obey His commands with their prayers, their fasting, and so on, and to refrain from His prohibitions so that they do not disobey Him (Exalted and Majestic is He). And upon them is to give thanks for His blessings by fulfilling them through obedience to Him.
And among giving thanks for them is their obedience to Allah and leaving His disobedience. This is part of giving thanks for the blessings: the blessing of health, the blessing of security, the blessing of wealth, the blessing of offspring, the blessing of trade, and so on. This is the obligation upon both groups, the jinn and the humans, to worship Allah alone with their prayers, their fasting, their supplication, and so on, and to disavow the worship of anything other than Him, and to give Him thanks for all His bestowals, giving Him thanks for all His blessings by obeying the commands, leaving the prohibitions, and praising Allah, praising Him (Glorified and Exalted is He), and extolling Him as the Generous, as the Bountiful, as the Doer of Good, and obeying His commands, refraining from His prohibitions, standing by His limits, hastening to what pleases Him, and staying away from His sins. Thus is the believer, and thus is the believing woman. And this is the obligation upon everyone, and this is the giving thanks that Allah commanded. May Allah guide them all.

The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good.
