Ruling on paying zakah on gold intended for adornment

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This is a question from the listening sister (A. S. 'A.) from the Arab Republic of Egypt. She says: I own gold jewelry that I wear, and I bought it some time ago, but I keep adding to it until its value now reached about one thousand five hundred Egyptian pounds. So, is it permissible to pay zakah on this jewelry? Or is it considered adornment that I adorn myself with?
Also, I have a small daughter for whom I bought gold so that she can wear it, and I am keeping this gold for her until she grows up and wears it, meaning: it is like money that is set aside, and its value is about eight hundred Egyptian pounds. So, is it obligatory for her to pay zakah on this gold? Because Allah the Exalted threatened those who hoard gold and silver with a painful punishment if they do not pay their zakah. And if there is no zakah on it, what is the meaning of hoarding then?

Answer:
This issue is a matter of disagreement among the scholars regarding the jewelry of a woman that she wears. The correct view is that there is zakah in it. This is the stronger of the scholars' opinions: that there is zakah in the jewelry of a woman and the jewelry of a girl alike, if each of them reaches the nisab. The nisab is twenty mithqals of gold, which amounts to ninety-two grams, and in Saudi pounds, it is eleven and a half pounds. So, if the gold you have reaches this amount, there is zakah in it. Likewise, what is with your daughter, if it reaches this amount, there is zakah in it, which is one-quarter of one-tenth: twenty-five from every thousand, twenty-five from every thousand. This is the zakah on gold, even if it is worn, even if it is for adornment. This is the preferred view; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to the woman who came to him with two bracelets of gold in her daughter's hand:
Do you give the zakah of this?أتعطين زكاة هذا؟
She said: No. He said:
Are you pleased that Allah may put two bangles of fire on your hands?أيسرك أن يسورك الله بهما يوم القيامة سوارين من نار؟
Sunan Abi Dawud 1563Hasan (Al-Albani)
So she threw them down and said: "They are for Allah and His Messenger."
And Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) used to wear ornaments of gold, so she said: "O Messenger of Allah, am I hoarding this?" He said:
Whatever reaches the amount where zakah is due, if zakah is paid on it, it is not a treasure.ما بلغ أن يزكى فزكي فليس بكنز
This indicates that jewelry is considered hoarding if its zakah is not paid.
So, it is obligatory for you to pay zakah on your jewelry and the girl's jewelry if each of them reaches the nisab that you heard, which is twenty mithqals of gold, or in other words: ninety-two grams, or in a third expression: eleven and a half Saudi or French gold pounds currently available. This is the amount of the nisab. If it is less than this, there is no zakah in it.
And the obligatory amount is one-quarter of one-tenth, meaning: one share out of forty, twenty-five from every thousand. This is the obligatory amount in gold and silver. Yes.
